What you should know!

Attendee Check-in:

Pick up your badges at Check-in under your name. No paperwork needed. Our Check-in table will be located in one of the main foyers at the hotel venue starting Wednesday evening. The Check-in table will be available during select times throughout the weekend. A paid order with your attendee info means you are registered and will have a badge waiting for you. About the Conference App for Attendees:

There will be a new interactive schedule app for 2026 (called “Whova”). Attendees will be provided access to the app to schedule your days and join events. You can use the app to set your schedule, select your seminars, read about speakers and exhibitors, share your bio, and interact with everyone.

Registered attendees will receive an email invite sent to the email address used to register them for the Conference. If you are attending, please check your inbox for the Whova invite. If you do not receive the invite, please check your “promo” folder and (in rare cases) your “junk” folder. We recommend you download the app once you receive the invite.

If you did not receive an invite to join the app, you can still download the app, find the CCEA Conference event, and log in.  For this to work, you must use the email address you registered for the Conference. If your email does not work, visit the Check-in table to get your badge and get help connecting with the app.

The is no invite code — if you received an invite code, that will not provide access.  Your email must be granted access from your registration.

You are not required to download the Whova app in order to participate with the Conference. We have provided every attendee with a special badge for access, and you can find the complete schedule above on this page. Your badge and the schedule will still let you enjoy the Conference. The app is provided for interaction and convenience.

Notes for Speakers / Presenters:

Presenter profiles in the Whova app have extra “bio” and profile fields, so you can share more with your audience.  You can include more description of your seminar, add article links, and include presentation materials for download.  We recommend uploading your docs to a Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Sharepoint folder (whatever you use everyday) and include the link toward the top of your profile.

The easiest way to update your profile is by filling out the “speaker form” that app provides. You may receive an email from the CCEA account at Whova, reminding you to update your speaker profile.

Attendees can scan your badge to find your profile, or look you up in the app, and connect with you or download docs.  Likewise, you can interact with your audience in the same way using the app.  You can request feedback, make community posts and create polls within the app.

Featured Schools Visit Bus Trip (Thursday):

Pickup is 8am outside the front entrance of the Conference hotel venue. Buses will depart at 8:30am. There will be 6-8 buses that will have pre-arranged schedules of school visits in varying sequences. The locations and bus schedules are subject to change. If there is space available on the day of, you may register in person with a credit card. The bus trip to the Getty Museum has been cancelled. If you purchased the Getty trip, we’ve automatically transferred you to join the Featured Schools trip instead — we will hold your spot for you and you can check-in with the group normally. Professional Awards and Exemplary Programs Dinner (Friday):

Friday, May 1st @ Los Angeles Marriott Burbank, starting at 6:30pm. Awards include Exemplary Programs, Superintendent of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Officer of the Year, Classified Employee of the Year, Counselor or Support Person of the Year, and our Student Essay winners. Exemplary Programs will be featured. Professional awards and the exemplary programs showcase will be presented in person, for the 2025-2026 school year. Dinner with a speaker, special guests, awards for personnel, essays, student art, Region Basket, Vendor’s Raffle/Auction Prizes. Attire is evening casual. Model Schools Awards Gala (Saturday):

The awards dinner will be Saturday, May 2, 2026 @ Autry Museum of the American West. At the Gala dinner, newly-selected Model Schools for 2026 will be awarded and recognized in person. Busing from the hotel to the gala will start at 5:30pm; President’s reception 6:30pm; dinner at 7pm, with the awards ceremony to follow, ending around 10pm (or later). Attire is evening casual. There will be a security / check-in area — as you arrive, please give the security staff your name and they will check you in. California Department of Education News Release

SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced today that 59 schools throughout the state were recognized as Model Continuation High Schools (MCHS) for 2026. Model Continuation High Schools provide comprehensive services to at-risk youth through exemplary instructional strategies, flexible scheduling, and guidance and counseling services. Continuation schools provide a high school diploma program for students who have not graduated from high school, are required to attend school, and are at risk of not completing their education.

“Today, we celebrate 59 commendable schools for their tremendous efforts as alternative campuses of learning,” Superintendent Thurmond said. “The priority of our Model Continuation High Schools is to give students more than a diploma. The teachers and administrators aim to provide students with a student-centered approach that meets their diverse academic, social, and emotional needs and opportunities to explore options beyond high school and prepare students for the future—whether they choose to pursue further education or join the workforce.”

More than 428 continuation high schools serve close to 45,000 students throughout the state. These schools excel and provide exceptional opportunities for their students to pursue academic and social success. For example:

Southern California

Alta Vista High School, Vista Unified School District, San Diego County
Alta Vista High School stands out for its deep commitment to relationships, relevance, and real-world learning through a Big Picture Learning and project-based learning approach. A defining highlight is the internship and work-based learning program, where students apply their learning in the community, build confidence, and form real connections. Students also participate in intramural sports to support wellness, teamwork, and belonging. During the site visit, parents shared words like “awesome,” “fantastic,” “magnificent,” and “life-changing” in describing the school.

John Hope Continuation High School, Los Angeles Unified School District, Los Angeles County
Students feel welcomed rather than “judged.” Respect for student identity is embedded in daily practice, which includes the consistent use of students’ chosen pronouns and a strong commitment to culturally responsive teaching. Students receive both in-school and after-school therapy services, including weekly group sessions known as “The Lunch Bunch,” which address student-identified needs such as grief, anxiety, identity, and relationship-building. The Psychiatric Social Worker coordinates referrals for students requiring more intensive services, while teachers and staff are trained to recognize early signs of distress and respond appropriately.

Summit High School, Desert Sands Unified School District, Riverside County
Summit High School exemplifies a holistic approach to education through its Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) wellness program, a vibrant art program, and a deeply rooted culture of inclusivity and belonging. Complementing the MTSS wellness program is Summit’s dynamic art program, which serves as both a creative outlet and a therapeutic resource for students. Art classes are designed to nurture self-expression, build confidence, and provide students with opportunities to explore their identities and lived experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

Central California

Sierra Continuation High School, Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District, Placer County
Students at Sierra are engaged and proud of their learning. In every classroom, collaboration, curiosity, and confidence fill the air. The onsite teen pregnancy program and daycare facility provide essential support to allow young parents to continue their education while caring for their children. The agriculture program stands out as a model of creativity and applied learning methods. Students are developing and producing a film on the controversial reintroduction of wolves in California. Their work has earned recognition with an invitation to present at the International Wild Film Festival in Montana—an inspiring example of student initiative and storytelling with real-world impact.

Yosemite High School, Merced Union High School District, Merced County
Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, including agriculture, welding, cosmetology, and energy and power technology, provide hands-on learning and industry certifications. Students engage in real-world projects such as growing produce in onsite greenhouses, designing solar-powered systems, and creating PurpleAir air monitors. These efforts have been showcased at statewide events like the California STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Symposium and the California Green Schools Summit. Leadership, engagement, and community involvement thrive through student leadership programs, intramural sports, after-school clubs, and partnerships with organizations such as Merced College and the Police Activities League. Creative projects, including a large pottery mosaic of Yosemite National Park, celebrate student identity and community while fostering collaboration and pride. They give some students their first win.

Northern California

Boynton High School, Campbell Union High School District, Santa Clara County
A clear and consistent theme across all focus groups was that Boynton represents an opportunity for a fresh start grounded in strong relationships, high expectations, and a deep sense of belonging. Students shared that within the smaller class environment, they feel respected, known, and motivated by teachers who provide individualized attention they had not experienced previously. Teachers leverage instructional flexibility and project-based learning to make content meaningful, as demonstrated through the Arts, Media, and Entertainment CTE program featuring a recording studio, animation software, and industry-informed coursework. Boynton’s whole-child approach is further strengthened by a robust, trauma-informed social–emotional learning framework. Students benefit from coordinated supports provided by school-based staff and community partners such as Counseling and Support Services for Youth (CASSY), San José City College, and the 49ers’ life skills program. These supports include grief groups, family needs assessments, college and financial aid workshops, conflict mediation, and access to food through the on-campus pantry.

The MCHS Recognition Program is a collaborative partnership between the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Continuation Education Association Plus (CCEA Plus). Schools operate their own exemplary programs, but Model Continuation High School–recognized educators commit to supporting and mentoring their peers in other local educational agencies.

The 59 schools selected as MCHS retain their designation for three years. They will be recognized at the CCEA Plus 2026 State Conference. For more information on continuation education, please visit the CDE Continuation Education web page.

California Department of Education News Release

SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced today that three schools have been selected as Model Community Day Schools (MCDSs) for 2026, the third year of implementation. Community day schools are schools for students who have been expelled from school or who have had problems with attendance or behavior. The MCDS Recognition Program is a partnership between the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Continuation Education Association Plus (CCEA Plus).

“The work happening in our Community Day Schools truly deserves this recognition,” said Superintendent Thurmond. “The schools we’re honoring today show an incredible commitment to their students and families. By offering flexible learning options, strong mental health supports, and other essential services, they are helping students build the skills and confidence they need to graduate from high school, pursue college or career training, and succeed in the workforce.”

During the three years that schools are designated as an MCDS, the CDE and CCEA Plus will identify them as resources for districts that are planning to establish new community day schools and for new and existing community day schools that would like expert support to expand and deepen their educational practices.

Schools were required to perform a self-evaluation focused on the following elements: (1) School Profile; (2) School Management; (3) Educating “This Whole Child” (Instruction); (4) Educating “This Whole Child” (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health and Development); and (5) School Evaluation of Effectiveness.

Each of the honorees retain their designation for three years and will be recognized at the CCEA Plus 2026 State Conference. Honorees are required to submit to the CDE an annual assurance of conformance to model school guidelines for the second and third years of designation. The Annual Assurance of Services Form will be available on the CDE MCDS Recognition Program web page.

The following schools are among the MCDSs that were named for 2026.

Aggeler Community Day School, Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles County)

The school provides structured essay writing and ethnic studies instruction, as well as advanced mathematics instruction, demonstrating high expectations for all learners. Professional development guided by texts such as Rigor by Design, Not Chance and Unearthing Joy reinforces reflective practice and instructional coherence. The student-created murals displayed throughout the campus further reflect the school’s emphasis on healing, expression, and belonging.

Carr Lake Community Day School, Salinas Union High School District (Monterey County)

Parents praise the school for doing an excellent job of bringing cultural relevance and meaningful experiences into students’ learning and school life. A strong emphasis is placed on preserving human dignity, recognizing that while students may have made poor choices, they are still individuals with feelings, experiences, and the capacity to grow. Students remember what adults say to them, and staff understand their responsibility to respond intentionally and compassionately, always being prepared with a plan B when students are triggered.

Santa Clara Community Day School, Santa Clara Unified School District (Santa Clara County)

The school offers exemplary, credit-bearing programs that integrate academics, social and emotional learning (SEL), and real-world relevance. These include rap music created through a partnership with the Hip-Hop Creatrix Program for which students are able to earn English credit for their music, the Fresh Lifelines for Youth program for civics and legal advocacy, Real Talk for health education, and farm-based learning aligned to science standards. These programs are reinforced through strong community partnerships, field trips, and enrichment opportunities that expand learning beyond the classroom. Students also benefit from therapy sessions, SEL lessons, and access to calming spaces, snacks, and individualized supports when needed.

Destinations to be visited may change depending on number of attendees and the schools. Transportation to and from the Conference venue is provided. Pickup will be at the Conference hotel venue at 8am, leaving at 8:30am, with the trip ending no later than 5pm.

Trip option #2: Getty Museum visit — see the famous museum and grounds at the Getty Center in Los Angeles with our group. Date: Thursday, April 30, 2026. Includes lunch and bus transportation. Transportation to and from the Conference venue is provided. Pickup will be at the Conference hotel venue at 8am, leaving at 8:30am, with the trip ending some time between 4-5pm.

Professional Awards Dinner

Professional Awards and Exemplary Programs Dinner: Friday, May 1st @ Los Angeles Marriott Burbank (Conference venue address above). Awards include Exemplary Programs, Superintendent of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Officer of the Year, Classified Employee of the Year, Counselor or Support Person of the Year, and our Student Essay winners. Exemplary Programs will be featured. Professional awards and the exemplary programs showcase will be presented in person, for the 2025-2026 school year. Model Schools Awards Gala

Model Schools Awards Gala: Saturday, May 2nd @ Autry Museum of the American West. At the Gala dinner, newly-selected Model Schools for 2026 will be awarded and recognized in person. Attire is evening casual. Tentative schedule: busing from the hotel to the gala starts as early as 5pm; President’s reception 6pm; dinner at 7pm, with the awards ceremony to follow. Book by 4/20/26. Trip option #1: featured school visits — see alternative education schools in action, on a guided tour. Date: Thursday, April 30, 2026. Includes school visits, lunch and bus transportation. Destinations to be visited may change depending on number of attendees and the schools. Transportation to and from the Conference venue is provided. Pickup will be at the Conference hotel venue at 8am, leaving at 8:30am, with the trip ending no later than 5pm.

Trip option #2: Getty Museum visit (CANCELLED: all participants will be transferred to Trip #1 automatically) — see the famous museum and grounds at the Getty Center in Los Angeles with our group. Date: Thursday, April 30, 2026. Includes lunch and bus transportation. Transportation to and from the Conference venue is provided. Pickup will be at the Conference hotel venue at 8am, leaving at 8:30am, with the trip ending some time between 4-5pm.

Bus trips are not included with Conference registration, and requires separate sign-up. Space is limited, please register early.

To Pay by Purchase Order or Check

Purchase orders (PO) payment is required in advance of the event for all attendees and dinner guests, in order to process badges, meals and seminars — by April 3rd to be in time for badge printing, but no later than 4/10/26. We require our online Purchase Order Request Form to be completed in advance. *Discounted pricing is not available for purchase orders or offline payments.

Each registration is $899.00 per person using this method without any addons. An additional processing fee is required. Registrations can only be processed once actual payment is received (required in advance of event). Active members can only receive member discounts online.

We invite all community day schools in the state to submit an application to become a “Model School” for 2025-2026, sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE).

The Model Community Day School (MCDS) Recognition Program will identify and recognize outstanding community day schools and will create a resource list of exemplary programs for school visitations and mentoring. The MCDS Recognition Program is sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE) in collaboration with the California Continuation Education Association Plus.

Community day schools serve and support high-risk youths, including those referred by expulsion, probation, a School Attendance Review Board or other district level referral process. They provide challenging academic curriculum and develop pro-social skills and resiliency. The CDE encourages community day schools to submit an application to the MCDS Recognition Program.

Intent to Submit Deadline: June 30, 2025

Principals who intend to submit an application must complete the MCDS Application “Intent to Submit” Survey online here. The survey will close on May 30, 2025 June 30, 2025, at 4 p.m. Please note: the deadline for intent has been extended by CDE after the application was published. Submission of the survey does not obligate the principal to submit an application.

Application Deadline: July 16, 2025

Applications must be submitted to the CDE electronically as a single PDF via the CDE exFiles File Transfer System (see application for specific instructions). Applications must be received by no later than 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Model School Application 2025-2026:

Annual Assurance of Services Forms for Current Model Schools (MCDSs):

Schools selected as MCDSs agree to submit an Annual Assurance of Services Form by June 30 for each of the second and third years of designation. The Annual Assurance of Services Form certifies that the school meets or exceeds the MCDS Recognition Program standards as described in the 2025–26 application. If the applicant school is selected as an MCDS in 2026, you may obtain a copy of the form from the CDE MCDS Recognition Program web page and retain it for your records. Complete the form and submit it to the CDE. A reminder email will be sent to principals and district superintendents in mid-April 2027 and 2028. The Annual Assurance of Services Form should include electronic signatures or typed names. Submission instructions are provided on the form.

Designation Period

Model Schools retain their award status for three years. The first MCDS awardees were selected in 2023 and announced in 2024. To avoid a gap period in your school’s MCDS designation status, new MCDSs would need to submit a new application in late summer / early spring 2026 for the 2027-2028 program year.

The application primarily consists of five narrative statements, addressing the following topics:

3. Educating “This Whole Child” (Instruction)
4. Educating “This Whole Child” (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health and Development)
5. School Evaluation of Effectiveness

Principals who intend to submit an application must complete the Intent to Submit form online in order to be considered for model school status. The CDE will be hosting a webinar on April 9, 2025, for prospective applicants. Any principal interested in applying may participate. Successful applicants will be identified through an application evaluation and site visit process. Representatives from the CDE and CCEA Plus will honor and present awards to 2025–26 MCDS Recognition Program awardees at the annual CCEA Plus State Conference.

Model School Application 2025-2026:

Schools selected as MCHSs are required to submit an Annual Assurance of Services Form to the CDE by June 30 for each of the second and third years of designation (see designation periods below). This form certifies that the school meets or exceeds the MCHS Recognition Program standards. Links to Annual Assurance of Services Forms for current MCHSs are provided above. Forms may include either an electronic signature or typed name and must be submitted to Dan Sackheim, Education Programs Consultant, Educational Options Office, by email at CONTINUATIONEDUC@cde.ca.gov.

From CDE, for current Model Schools: As a condition of continuing eligibility for designation by the California Department of Education (CDE) as a Model Continuation High School (MCHS), a completed Annual Assurance of Services Form must be submitted to the CDE by June 30, 2025, for schools selected in 2023 or 2024. On an additional sheet of paper, describe any changes that have occurred in the past year that could affect the status of your school as an MCHS. For example, describe whether the enrollment has increased or decreased. If enrollment has changed, describe how staffing has changed to maintain a low student-teacher ratio. If no changes have occurred, you are welcome to attach a statement describing any future developments related to student engagement and community collaboration. Your completed Annual Assurance of Services Form and any supporting documents (e.g., a description of changes or a “no change” statement), must be submitted by the deadline.

The CDE will be hosting a webinar on April 9, 2025, for prospective applicants. Any principal interested in applying may participate. The principal may also designate someone else to attend in their place. The webinar will provide information regarding the application and the application process. To sign up for the webinar and receive the required login information, check for scheduling and details on the CDE’s MCHS Recognition Program web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/sr/mc/.

Successful applicants will be identified through an application evaluation and site visit process. Representatives from the CDE and CCEA Plus will honor and present awards to 2025–26 MCHS Recognition Program awardees at the annual CCEA Plus State Conference.

Important Dates to Remember

• A webinar will be held on April 9, 2025 for prospective applicants, with a second webinar scheduled on May 22, 2025.
• The Intent to Submit online form must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025 (extended by CDE from the original deadline May 30, 2025).
• A single PDF of the completed application must be submitted to the CDE via the exFiles Transfer System. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
• In accordance with the application screening process, if corrections are made, submit a revised single PDF of the application to the CDE via the exFiles File Transfer System. Corrected applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Deadline requirement: Any applications that are not received by the July 16, 2025, deadline will be disqualified. Corrections may only be made to applications that are received by the July 16, 2025, deadline.

Conference Attendees: Pick up your badges at Check-in under your name. No paperwork needed. Our Check-in table will be located in one of the main foyers at the hotel venue starting Thursday evening. The Check-in table will be available during select times throughout the weekend. All attendee names and payments were due in hand by 4/10/24 — a paid order with your attendee info means you are registered and will have a badge waiting for you. Model School Visit Trip: Pickup is 8am outside the front entrance of the Conference hotel venue. Buses will depart at 8:30am. There will be 3-4 buses that will have pre-arranged schedules of school visits in varying sequences. The locations and bus schedules are subject to change. Meet and Greet Party: Big social event with food, games, giveaways and a no host bar. Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 7pm – 9pm. Location: Flamingo Lawn. All Conference attendees are invited to join us at the Town & Country resort for some fun and networking. View party info

Model Schools Awards Gala: The awards dinner will be Saturday, April 26th @ USS Midway aircraft carrier on the water. At the Gala dinner, newly-selected Model Schools for 2025 will be awarded and recognized in person. Busing from the hotel to the gala will start at 5:30pm; President’s reception 6:30pm; dinner at 7pm, with the awards ceremony to follow, ending around 10pm (or later). Attire is evening casual. There will be a security / check-in area — as you arrive, please give the security staff your name and they will check you in. Purchase tickets and tables
