Important Event Notes

Membership Required: CCEA Plus membership is required for all Conference attendees and presenters. Active members can register online for a discounted price; this discount is only available for online registration, through the member’s account login.

Confirmation: payment is required in advance of the event for all attendees and dinner guests, in order to process badges, meals and seminars — by April 10th to be in time for badge printing, but no later than 4/24/23. Online registration provides immediate confirmation and an email receipt, with payment options including credit card, PayPal and Check (debit/withdrawal). Online registration is the preferred method for the 2023 Conference.

Once Registered: once paid, you are confirmed. Registered attendees can swing by Check-in at the Conference hotel venue and pick up their badges. Dinner guests do not need tickets, seats will be set aside for them. Advanced payment is sufficient, best before April 15th for personalized badge printing.

Group Registration: if you are purchasing for a group of attendees, our Group Registration allows you to easily register a number of attendees in one purchase. Receipt is automatically emailed for your records.

Meals Included: all Conference registrations include the meals, listed below. Each Conference registration includes dinner for the attendee at the Friday Awards Gala. If you plan to bring a guest to the Awards dinner, please purchase an Extra Dinner Ticket.

About the Conference

This is the one conference of the year that focuses solely on the needs of continuation and community day schools. Come and hear about best practices from school educators from around the state. Topics will range from curriculum to climate, building hope with our students to taking care of our staffs. We’ll have experts from the California Department of Education to answer your questions about the DASS and the Model School program. In addition to the workshops and speakers, we have found that attendees value the opportunity to meet and share ideas with our colleagues from Alt Ed schools throughout California. We can learn best practices and new approaches to issues, and we can share our ideas with others. The conference is valuable for anyone who works in a alternative school setting. Administrators, teachers, counselors, and classified staff all find relevant, “ready to implement” strategies for the classroom and school. Agenda: here’s the preliminary schedule — the Model School visit trip begins at 8:30am on Thursday, April 27th, with early Check-in for the Conference throughout the day. Thursday eve will host a meet & greet party, starting at 7pm for all Conference attendees. Registration, buffet breakfast, and activities begin early Friday morning (April 28th) with seminars and events throughout the day. Important reminder!

The CCEA+ Conference venue is providing our group with a special hotel room rate. Since the room block is limited, be sure to confirm your hotel reservations before August 15th. It’s likely that you need to re-book with the hotel if you made reservations last year or this past spring.

We want to make sure you lock in the discounted price and a good room early. The group rate is around $182 per night, which is substantially lower than their regular rate (especially for a waterfront hotel).

This year, the 2021 Conference will be at the San Diego Sheraton in the middle of September, and time is short. We usually gather for this big annual event at the end of the school year, but this time we’ll be together at the start. The Conference dates are Sept. 16 – 19, with the Model School Gala on Friday, Sept. 17th in the evening.

Online reservations are recommended by the hotel to ensure you get the lower price.

It is with deep regret that CCEA+ must postpone the annual Conference from April to September 2021. Even though we have made tremendous strides to create, prepare and structure a conference with your health as our top priority, San Diego County health officials and the Port District will prevent CCEA+ from hosting the events in April as planned. To further complicate their latest rules, local officials have no guidance from the state on how to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 for professional gatherings.

Therefore, the CCEA+ board, in concert with state and local officials, have decided to move the conference weekend to the fall. The new Conference dates will be September 16 – 19, 2021 in San Diego, CA.

We are now working through the ramifications of this devastating news, and have already taken immediate action to reschedule and contract the new dates at the same venues, including the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel and the USS Midway. We understand the inconvenience this brings to those of you who have already made arrangements to be with us. As a member and a full-time educator traveling to San Diego, I understand that personally. We hope that you can understand the gravity and impact of the situation for our nonprofit organization and our Alt. Ed. community.

As before, ALL conference purchases and Model School Gala reservations will be honored and credited automatically for the new dates, with no further action required by our members and school districts. All deposits for the CCEA+ Model School Gala and the conference will be transferred to the new dates. Existing hotel reservations will be automatically cancelled and can be re-booked at your convenience. We’ll have more detail on the Conference page for you.

We are working hard in the background to bring you the best experience possible this September, with seminars, speakers, break-out sessions, camaraderie and fun overlooking the ocean. We will be able to celebrate our 2020 and 2021 Model Schools and professional awards in person, and can’t wait to see you then.

Membership Required: CCEA membership is required for all Conference attendees and presenters. Active members can register online for a discounted price; this discount is only available for online registration, through the member’s account login.

Confirmation: payment is required in advance of the event for all attendees and dinner guests, in order to process badges, meals and seminars. Online registration provides immediate confirmation and an email receipt, with payment options including credit card, PayPal and Check (debit/withdrawal). Online registration is the preferred method for the 2020 Conference.

Group Registration: if you are purchasing for a group of attendees, our Group Registration allows you to easily register a number of attendees in one purchase.

Meals Included: all Conference registrations include 6 meals, listed below. Each Conference registration includes dinner for the attendee at the Friday Awards Gala. If you plan to bring a guest to the Awards dinner, please purchase an Extra Dinner Ticket.

Once Registered: once paid, you are confirmed. Registered attendees can swing by check-in at the Conference and pick up their badges. Dinner guests do not need tickets, seats will be set aside for them. Advanced payment is sufficient, best before September 15th.

Keynote: Jack O’Connell is a former Calif State Superintendent of Education. He is also a partner with Barrett with Capital Advisors Group, an educational lobbyist group. Distinguished speakers include Jenny Singh and Betty Miura, CDE Accountability Adminstrators

About the Conference: This is the one conference of the year that focuses solely on the needs of continuation schools. Come and hear about best practices from continuation school educators from around the state. Topics will range from curriculum to climate, building hope with our students to taking care of our staffs. We’ll have experts from the California Department of Education to answer your questions about the DASS. In addition to the workshops and keynote speakers, we have found that attendees value the opportunity to meet and share ideas with our colleagues from continuation schools throughout California. We can learn best practices and new approaches to issues, and we can share our ideas with others. The conference is valuable for anyone who works in a continuation school setting. Administrators, teachers, counselors, and classified staff all find relevant, “ready to implement” strategies for the classroom and school. DASS SEL innovative practices in alternative education and more!

Agenda: early check-in starts Thursday, October 1st at 5pm. Awards, Gala and Opportunities

Model Schools Awards Gala: Friday, Oct. 2nd — the dinner will be held at the San Diego Maritime Museum on-board the Berkeley, a famous ferry boat that traveled on the Sacramento River. Transportation is provided to and from the hotel venue at no extra charge. Full Museum experience included in the ticket price, with several ships and submarines to see. Different hours, 4 – 10PM, to allow you to explore what the museum has to offer. At the Gala dinner, newly-selected Model Schools will be awarded and recognized. Professional awards and exemplary programs will be presented on Oct. 3rd (see below).

Exemplary Programs and Professional Awards Lunch: submit your nominee or program in advance of the Conference anytime until the March 6, 2020 deadline. Awards include Exemplary Programs, Superintendent of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Counselor or Support Person of the Year, and our Student Essay winners. Exemplary Programs will be featured; there will be no Roundtable Showcase. Professional awards and the exemplary programs showcase will be presented at the Saturday Awards lunch, Oct. 3rd, from 11:45 – 1:45PM @ Harbor Island Ballroom, Sheraton San Diego (the Conference venue). Model School Visit: you may sign up for a spot on the Model School Visit bus trip during the 2020 Conference. Date: Friday, October 2, 2020. Transportation to and from the Conference venue is provided in the fee. Pickup will be at the Conference hotel venue at 9am, with the visit 9am-12pm. Student Art Show: we host a student art display each year in one of the main areas of the Conference. Consider including your students’ art. We’ll post the flyer and details in early 2020.

Student Essay Contest: enter your top student’s essay. Each school may submit up to two essays, one from a Senior and one from a Junior. The top six essays will be recognized. The top three will receive awards and featured recognition at our annual CCEA conference. Learn more

Continuation High School Leadership Academy — Thursday, April 26, 2018.

Hosted in San Diego, a day before the 2018 CCEA Conference, Leadership Academy will be a one-day seminar focusing on the Education Code and the operation of a Continuation High School.

The event will be presented by Joe Stits, former Assistant Superintendent of Bellflower Unified School District, past CCEA President and Presenter of the CCEA Principals Institute.
