We invite all Public Charter Schools, Local District Programs, County Office of Education Programs to apply for this special statewide award for the 2026-2027 school year.

The “California Independent Study School of Excellence Award” (ISSE) recognizes outstanding standards for independent programs in alternative education. Designated schools are honored in person at the annual Conference, and publicly announced to their peer schools as an exceptional model to replicate in the state of California.

Schools selected for this designation will receive high-profile professional honors, including:

• An official CCEA Plus Certificate for the Independent Study Schools of Excellence Recognition Award.
• A customized commemorative plaque to display on your campus.
• Formal, on-stage celebration and presentation during the 2027 Model School Gala Awards.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this recognition award, applicant schools must meet the following baseline parameters:

Operational History: Must have at least three (3) consecutive years of operation.

Governance Type: Must operate under one of the following structures within California:

• Public Charter School
• Local School District Program (LEA)
• County Office of Education (COE) Program

How to Apply

Before submitting any other application materials, please email the information page to the program coordinator first at — erikg (at) cceanet (dot) org.  Once that is received, you will receive access to a private upload area. All application materials should ultimately be uploaded directly to the CCEA server by the deadline. Forms should be in PDF format.

A completed application includes the following:

1. Completed Independent Study School of Excellence Award Application

• Cover Page
• School Information Page
• Narrative Sections A through F

2. Valid WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Awards Letter

3. Blank copy of your program’s Master Written Agreement / Learning Contract (included as a mandatory operational reference).

Dear Alternative Ed Community,

On behalf of the CCEA Plus Board, I’m excited to introduce a new recognition opportunity for Independent Study schools and programs across California. This pilot recognition award is designed to celebrate schools and programs that demonstrate excellence, innovation and a strong commitment to serving students through high-quality independent study practices.

Independent Study programs play an essential role in providing flexible, student-centered learning options for diverse learners throughout the state. This new recognition by CCEA Plus will highlight programs that are creating meaningful opportunities for students, supporting academic success, building strong systems of support and developing practices that other schools can learn from.

We encourage Independent Study schools and programs throughout California to apply and share the impactful work they are doing for students, families and communities. As this recognition continues to grow, CCEA Plus hopes to elevate promising practices, celebrate dedicated educators and strengthen the network of Independent Study programs across the state.

As this is the pilot year for the Independent Study School/Program Recognition Award, applicants will play an important role in helping shape the future of this recognition process. Feedback, participation and shared examples of effective practices will help CCEA Plus continue to refine the award, ensure it reflects the unique strengths of Independent Study programs and build a meaningful recognition that supports schools across California for years to come.

Professional Awards and Exemplary Programs Dinner: Friday, May 1st @ Los Angeles Marriott Burbank (Conference venue address above). Awards include Exemplary Programs, Superintendent of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Officer of the Year, Classified Employee of the Year, Counselor or Support Person of the Year, and our Student Essay winners. Exemplary Programs will be featured. Professional awards and the exemplary programs showcase will be presented in person, for the 2025-2026 school year. Model Schools Awards Gala: Saturday, May 2nd @ Autry Museum of the American West. At the Gala dinner, newly-selected Model Schools for 2026 will be awarded and recognized in person. Attire is evening casual. Tentative schedule: busing from the hotel to the gala starts as early as 5pm; President’s reception 6pm; dinner at 7pm, with the awards ceremony to follow. Book by 4/20/26. Trip option #1: featured school visits — see alternative education schools in action, on a guided tour. Date: Thursday, April 30, 2026. Includes school visits, lunch and bus transportation. Destinations to be visited may change depending on number of attendees and the schools. Transportation to and from the Conference venue is provided. Pickup will be at the Conference hotel venue at 8am, leaving at 8:30am, with the trip ending no later than 5pm.

Trip option #2: Getty Museum visit (CANCELLED: all participants will be transferred to Trip #1 automatically) — see the famous museum and grounds at the Getty Center in Los Angeles with our group. Date: Thursday, April 30, 2026. Includes lunch and bus transportation. Transportation to and from the Conference venue is provided. Pickup will be at the Conference hotel venue at 8am, leaving at 8:30am, with the trip ending some time between 4-5pm.

Bus trips are not included with Conference registration, and requires separate sign-up. Space is limited, please register early.

Purchase orders (PO) payment is required in advance of the event for all attendees and dinner guests, in order to process badges, meals and seminars — by April 3rd to be in time for badge printing, but no later than 4/10/26. We require our online Purchase Order Request Form to be completed in advance. *Discounted pricing is not available for purchase orders or offline payments.

Each registration is $899.00 per person using this method without any addons. An additional processing fee is required. Registrations can only be processed once actual payment is received (required in advance of event). Active members can only receive member discounts online.

Model Schools Awards Gala: Saturday, April 27th @ Universal Studios Hollywood (Sound Stage 15). At the Gala dinner, newly-selected Model Schools for 2024 will be awarded and recognized in person. Attire is evening casual. Tentative schedule: busing from the hotel to the gala starts as early as 3pm; President’s reception 6:30pm; dinner at 7:30pm, with the awards ceremony to follow. Purchase orders (PO) payment is required in advance of the event for all attendees and dinner guests, in order to process badges, meals and seminars — by April 8th to be in time for badge printing, but no later than 4/21/24. About the Conference

This is the one conference of the year that focuses solely on the needs of continuation and community day schools. Come and hear about best practices from school educators from around the state. Topics will range from curriculum to climate, building hope with our students to taking care of our staffs. We’ll have experts from the California Department of Education to answer your questions about the DASS and the Model School program. In addition to the workshops and speakers, we have found that attendees value the opportunity to meet and share ideas with our colleagues from Alt Ed schools throughout California. We can learn best practices and new approaches to issues, and we can share our ideas with others. The conference is valuable for anyone who works in a alternative school setting. Administrators, teachers, counselors, and classified staff all find relevant, “ready to implement” strategies for the classroom and school. Agenda: here’s the preliminary schedule — the Model School visit trip begins at 8:30am on Thursday, April 27th, with early Check-in for the Conference throughout the day. About the Conference

This is the one conference of the year that focuses solely on the needs of continuation and community day schools. Come and hear about best practices from school educators from around the state. Topics will range from curriculum to climate, building hope with our students to taking care of our staffs. We’ll have experts from the California Department of Education to answer your questions about the DASS. In addition to the workshops and keynote speakers, we have found that attendees value the opportunity to meet and share ideas with our colleagues from continuation schools throughout California. We can learn best practices and new approaches to issues, and we can share our ideas with others. The conference is valuable for anyone who works in a continuation school setting. Administrators, teachers, counselors, and classified staff all find relevant, “ready to implement” strategies for the classroom and school. Agenda: Tentative Schedule (click link for more details) — here’s the summary: the Model School visit trip begins at 8am on Thursday, May 5th, with an MCHS application seminar at 3pm the same day. Early check-in for the weekend Conference starts Thursday at 5pm, with an “Ignite Your Mind” meet and greet party starting at 7pm. Registration, buffet breakfast, and activities begin early Friday morning (May 6th) with seminars and events throughout the day. The Gala dinner begins with a reception in the evening at 7pm (May 6th). All day Saturday seminars and activities, with the Professional Awards lunch at 11:45AM. The Conference goes to around midday on Sunday (May 8th). The full schedule will be available late Spring 2022 in an interactive app for attendees.

Model Schools Awards Gala: Friday, May 6th @ Aquarium of the Pacific. At the Gala dinner, newly-selected Model Schools from 2022 will be awarded and recognized in person. Attire is evening casual. Tentative schedule: busing from the hotel to the gala starts at 6:30pm; President’s reception 7pm in the upper room gallery; dinner at 8pm on the main floor; awards at 9pm. Three course meal! Aquarium closes at 6pm; includes admission to gallery, you can wander around the aquarium on arrival. Exemplary Programs and Professional Awards Lunch: Saturday, May 7th @ Renaissance Long Beach Hotel, from 11:45 – 1:45pm. Awards include Exemplary Programs, Superintendent of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Counselor or Support Person of the Year, and our Student Essay winners. Exemplary Programs will be featured; there will be no Roundtable Showcase. Professional awards and the exemplary programs showcase will be presented at the Saturday Awards luncheon. Model School Visit: see two Model School in action, on a guided tour. Sign up is a separate, or as an add-on to Conference registration. Date: Thursday, May 5, 2022. Includes two model school visits, box lunch and bus transportation. Transportation to and from the Conference venue is provided. Pickup will be at the Conference hotel venue at 8am, with the visits 8am – 1pm. The trip is not included with Conference registration, and requires separate sign-up. Model School Application Instruction Seminar: get small-group guidance for the Model School program, and instruction for filling out the MCHS application. Date: Thursday, May 5, 2022. Times: 3 – 5pm. Location: Conference hotel, room number to be announced. Good chance for Q&A about becoming a Model School! Student Essay Contest: enter your top student’s essay. Each school may submit up to two essays, one from a Senior and one from a Junior. The top six essays will be recognized.
