Schools selected as MCDSs agree to submit an Annual Assurance of Services Form by June 30 for each of the second and third years of designation. The Annual Assurance of Services Form certifies that the school meets or exceeds the MCDS Recognition Program standards as described in the 2025–26 application. If the applicant school is selected as an MCDS in 2026, you may obtain a copy of the form from the CDE MCDS Recognition Program web page and retain it for your records. Complete the form and submit it to the CDE. A reminder email will be sent to principals and district superintendents in mid-April 2027 and 2028. The Annual Assurance of Services Form should include electronic signatures or typed names. Submission instructions are provided on the form.

Alternately, you can download the latest application forms at CDE.

Designation Period

Model Schools retain their award status for three years. The first MCDS awardees were selected in 2023 and announced in 2024. To avoid a gap period in your school’s MCDS designation status, new MCDSs would need to submit a new application in late summer / early spring 2026 for the 2027-2028 program year.

Schools selected as MCDSs agree to submit an Annual Assurance of Services Form by June 30 for each of the second and third years of designation. The Annual Assurance of Services Form certifies that the school meets or exceeds the MCDS Recognition Program standards as described in the 2024–25 application. If the applicant school is selected as an MCDS in 2025, you may obtain a copy of the form from the CDE MCDS Recognition Program web page and retain it for your records. Complete the form and submit it to the CDE. A reminder email will be sent to principals and district superintendents in mid-April 2026 and 2027. The Annual Assurance of Services Form should include electronic signatures or typed names. Submission instructions are provided on the form.

Alternately, you can download the latest application forms at CDE.

Model Schools retain their award status for three years. The first MCDS awardees will be selected in 2023 and announced in 2024. To avoid a gap period in your school’s MCDS designation status, new MCHSs would need to submit a new application in late summer / early fall 2025 for the 2025-2026 program year.

This is the new application for Community Day Schools to apply to become Model Schools, announced by CDE on September 12, 2023.

We invite all community day schools in the state to submit an application to become a “Model School” for 2023-2024, co-sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE).

The newly developed Model Community Day School (MCDS) Recognition Program will identify and recognize outstanding community day schools and will create a resource list of exemplary programs for school visitations and mentoring. The MCDS Recognition Program is sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE) in collaboration with the California Continuation Education Association Plus.

Community day schools serve and support high-risk youths, including those referred by expulsion, probation, a School Attendance Review Board or other district level referral process. They provide challenging academic curriculum and develop pro-social skills and resiliency. The CDE encourages community day schools to submit an application to the MCDS Recognition Program.

Annual Assurance of Services:

Schools selected as MCDSs agree to submit an Annual Assurance of Services Form by June 30 for each of the second and third years of designation. The Annual Assurance of Services Form certifies that the school meets or exceeds the MCDS Recognition Program standards as described in the 2023–24 application. If the applicant school is selected as an MCDS in 2024, you may obtain a copy of the form from the CDE MCDS Recognition Program web page and retain it for your records. Complete the form and submit it to the CDE on or before the following dates: June 30, 2025, and June 30, 2026. A reminder email will be sent to principals and district superintendents in mid-April 2025 and 2026. The Annual Assurance of Services Form should include electronic signatures or typed names. Submission instructions are provided on the form.

Alternately, you can download the latest application forms at CDE.

Designation Period

Model Schools retain their award status for three years. The first MCDS awardees will be selected in 2023 and announced in 2024. To avoid a gap period in your school’s MCDS designation status, new MCHSs would need to submit a new application in late summer / early fall 2025 for the 2025-2026 program year.

Dear Community Day School Principals and District Superintendents:

I invite you to participate in the Model Community Day School (MCDS) Recognition Program sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE) in collaboration with the California Continuation Education Association Plus (CCEA Plus).

The newly developed MCDS Recognition Program is based on the longstanding Model Continuation High School Recognition Program. The MCDS Recognition Program identifies and recognizes outstanding programs. In addition to celebrating excellence, a major goal of this program will be to create and maintain a resource of exemplary programs for school visitations and other forms of peer mentoring to support other schools to adapt successful approaches and practices of these model schools in their own communities.

California’s MCDSs provide comprehensive services to students whose needs and strengths can be better met within these specialized settings using exemplary asset-based positive instructional strategies and social, emotional, and mental health and guidance and support services.

The application primarily consists of five narrative statements, addressing the following topics:

School Profile

School Management

Educating “This Whole Child” (Instruction)

Educating “This Whole Child” (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health and Development)

School Evaluation of Effectiveness

Principals who intend to submit an application must complete the Intent to Submit form online in order to be considered for model school status. The online form will close on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 4 p.m. Submission of the online form does not obligate the principal to submit an application.

The self-nomination application packet is available on the CDE MCDS Recognition Program web page and on the CCEA Plus Model School Recognition Program web page. The packet includes instructions for completing the application and required forms and instructions for submitting the application via the CDE exFiles File Transfer System. Applications are due on Friday, October 20, 2023.

The CDE will be hosting a webinar on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, for prospective applicants. Any principal interested in applying may participate. The principal may also designate someone else to attend in their place. The webinar will provide information regarding the application and the application process. To sign up for the webinar and receive the required login information, check for scheduling and details on the CDE MCDS Recognition Program web page.

Successful applicants will be identified through an application evaluation and site visit process. Representatives from the CDE and CCEA Plus will honor and present awards to 2023–24 MCDS Recognition Program awardees at the annual CCEA Plus State Conference.

If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact Dan Sackheim, Education Programs Consultant, Educational Options Office, by phone at 916-323-2183 or by email at CommunityDayScl@cde.ca.gov.

Just prior to the pandemic and the closing of in-person instruction, the Alternative Education school site, which includes Noyo High School [a continuation high school], Lighthouse Community Day School, and Shelter Cove Community Day School, had shifted to a whole new way of teaching and learning, called Big Picture Learning. This education model is based on students discovering what they are interested in, through a process of self-inquiry and reflection; students then work with their advisor to put together a small team (other school staff, friends, community members, family etc.) to create a Learning Plan.

They then explore their chosen topics, working on projects, culminating in an exhibition (occurring quarterly) they present to their Learning Team. Older students progress to job/career-based learning; students find a local person in the community to work with as their mentor, as they learn a specific job or skill that interests them. This real-world style of learning fully engages students as they see the relevance of what they are learning first-hand. Our hats are off to the Alt. Ed. staff!

As we all cope with the challenges of COVID-19, it’s important to celebrate the hard work of our educators, students and staff across California. On behalf of everyone at CCEA Plus, congratulations to the Class of 2020!

One of our members, Bryan Love, shared his school’s graduation during the pandemic. Bryan is lead teacher at the New School Community Day High School. Principal Rafael Ramirez and his day school have been a part of CCEA Plus since 2018, while Bryan’s been with us since 2016.

Here’s their graduation experience this year (quoted):

The motto of New School Community Day School in Watsonville, CA is “Never Give Up!” So, when New School’s “Drive Through” graduation event had to be postponed from June 4, they rose to the occasion.

All eleven members of New School’s graduating class of 2020 were met by New School’s complete administration, teaching, and classified staff, as well as Pajaro Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees President, Daniel Dodge Jr. and Assistant Superintendent of Secondary and Alternative Education, Kristen Shouse, in the school’s decorated driveway on Monday, June 8.

Unphased by the rescheduled event, New School graduate and winner of New School’s Attendance Award and Watsonville Rotary Scholarship stated that:

“Moving to New School was one of the best decisions of my life. I love it, and I am so sad to have to move on. In my twelve years of school I have never seen a teacher actually care about their students as much as every member of New School’s staff cares about every student. New School is more like a second home than a school. New School has so many opportunities. It was definitely a life changing experience for me.”

Graduates drove through yesterday’s honoration with friends and family.

Students typically come to New School with truancy issues, credit deficits, disciplinary records or with stipulations of their probation to attend. Today, New School serves 55 students, that are 100% Latino/Latina, 80% English Language Learners, 90% of whom come from families that qualify as low-income.

Most of our students are here for credit recovery. Prior to admission, they must acknowledge responsibility for their mistakes and commit to changing unproductive habits. Our goal is to help our youth correct behaviors so that they can become more productive at school, at home, at work, and in the community.

Community day schools serve mandatory and other expelled students, students referred by a School Attendance Review Board, and other high-risk youths. The 360-minute minimum instructional day includes academic programs that provide challenging curriculum and individual attention to student learning modalities and abilities. Community day school programs also focus on the development of prosocial skills and student self-esteem and resiliency.

Community day schools are intended to have low student-teacher ratios. Students benefit from learning support services that include school counselors and psychologists, academic and vocational counselors, and pupil discipline personnel. Students also receive collaborative services from county offices of education, law enforcement, probation, and human services agency personnel who work with at-risk youth.
