A Special Message from Dan Sackheim, CDE Program Consultant and Liaison for Continuation Education and Community Day Schools:

Many of you may already know me, as educational options educators often wear multiple hats. I am honored to have been the CDE community day school program consultant from nearly the inception, being hired as soon as the position was authorized in 1997. One of my first steps in that role was to find strong field experts, with whom I built the Community Day School Network (CDSN) professional association, to ensure that we all benefited from a collective wisdom. In recent months, the CDSN was invited and merged into CCEA to form CCEA Plus. Soon after, I was assigned as the CDE program consultant for continuation education.

I am still learning, but am not fully new to continuation education, having served as a member of review teams for Model Continuation High Schools. Additionally, at times, I have been the CDE program lead for many other types of educational options schools and programs share the same concerns and supportive methodologies for supporting our students, including opportunity education, county court and community schools, alternative schools of choice and independent study. I also share leadership at CDE regarding asset-based behavioral strategies and supports, and for addressing absenteeism and barriers to attendance.

I look forward to meeting you at conferences, in workshops and webinars, through my email and listserve, and any other way I can learn from and promote your wisdom and make resources and information available to you.

What is DASS?

Dashboard Alternative School Status (DASS): In 2013, California’s accountability system significantly changed with the adoption of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). This new accountability system, the California School Dashboard (Dashboard), contains state indicators and standards to help identify a school’s strengths, weaknesses, and areas in need of improvement. The Dashboard Alternative School Status (DASS) program replaces the previously administered Alternative Schools Accountability Model (ASAM) and holds alternative schools and alternative schools of choice accountable for modified methods of measurement for accountability indicators, when appropriate. DASS is for schools that serve high-risk students. DASS Schools received a Dashboard for the first time in Fall 2018. Schools that participate in DASS will have their information displayed on the same Dashboard and be measured on the same set of indicators as non-alternative schools.

Six State Indicators

• Academic Indicator (English Language Arts and Mathematics)
• Chronic Absenteeism Indicator
• College/Career Indicator
• English Learner Progress Indicator (2018 Dashboard data are limited to assessment results)
• Graduation Rate Indicator
• Suspension Rate Indicator

DASS schools will receive one of five color-coded performance levels for each indicator, identical to those given to non-alternative schools. Performance levels range from lowest to highest performance and include red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.

The state indicators and standards were developed for non-alternative schools. In order to fairly evaluate the success and progress of alternative schools that serve high-risk students, modified measures may be used for certain indicators. This means that these indicators may be calculated differently, or use different criteria, for DASS schools.

According to the California Department of Education, DASS is “modified methods of measurement for indicators that are aligned with the evaluation rubrics of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) to evaluate the success or progress of schools that serve high-risk students.”

Membership Required: CCEA membership is required for all Conference attendees and presenters. Active members can register online for a discounted price; this discount is only available for online registration, through the member’s account login.

Confirmation: payment is required in advance of the event for all attendees and dinner guests, in order to process badges, meals and seminars. Online registration provides immediate confirmation and an email receipt, with payment options including credit card, PayPal and Check (debit/withdrawal). Online registration is the preferred method for the 2020 Conference.

About the Conference: This is the one conference of the year that focuses solely on the needs of continuation schools. Come and hear about best practices from continuation school educators from around the state. Topics will range from curriculum to climate, building hope with our students to taking care of our staffs. We’ll have experts from the California Department of Education to answer your questions about the DASS. In addition to the workshops and keynote speakers, we have found that attendees value the opportunity to meet and share ideas with our colleagues from continuation schools throughout California. We can learn best practices and new approaches to issues, and we can share our ideas with others. The conference is valuable for anyone who works in a continuation school setting. Model Schools Awards Gala: Friday, Oct. 2nd — the dinner will be held at the San Diego Maritime Museum on-board the Berkeley, a famous ferry boat that traveled on the Sacramento River. Transportation is provided to and from the hotel venue at no extra charge. Full Museum experience included in the ticket price, with several ships and submarines to see. Different hours, 4 – 10PM, to allow you to explore what the museum has to offer. At the Gala dinner, newly-selected Model Schools will be awarded and recognized. Professional awards and exemplary programs will be presented on Oct. 3rd (see below).

Exemplary Programs and Professional Awards Lunch: submit your nominee or program in advance of the Conference anytime until the March 6, 2020 deadline. Awards include Exemplary Programs, Superintendent of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Counselor or Support Person of the Year, and our Student Essay winners. Exemplary Programs will be featured; there will be no Roundtable Showcase. Greetings! My name is Vic Whitaker, and I’m CCEA’s newly appointed Executive Director.  Please allow me an opportunity to introduce myself.

I retired several years ago after teaching for 35 years in the same continuation high school, Chaparral High School in San Diego, California.  I’ve been a continuous member of CCEA for 53 years, attending all conferences except for one.  I have served in all Executive Board positions over the years — President, Past President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.  I’ve even been a Board Consultant on two separate occasions.

Along with my friend and colleague, Mr. Joe Stits (an honorary life-time CCEA member), and others from the California Department of Education, we established the “California State Model Continuation High School Recognition Program” and I have served as the chief consultant to the CDE for that program since its inception.

As your new Executive Director, I would like to welcome you to our ever-evolving organization.  CCEA is on the move — new, refreshed, inspired and in pursuit of effective, efficient advocacy and resourcing.

Your new and very talented Executive Board and Regional Advisors have been working tirelessly to bring you a new and up to date CCEA which will meet your needs far into the future.  We have also brought to you a very exciting, redesigned and interactive website — cceanet.org.  It truly is an interactive one-stop shop for all your questions, educational needs, purchases and information.  I encourage you to visit again soon, and often, as there are daily changes occurring.

Things You Should Know

Accrediting Commission for Schools Western Association of Schools and Colleges

Have you considered volunteering to serve as a member of an ACS WASC visiting committee? WASC is one of the six regional accreditation agencies in the United States. An ACS WASC accreditation validates the diploma your school provides as well as makes your school eligible for Model Continuation School status. If you are interested in serving on a committee and learning the process of the ACS WASC, process please volunteer. It is often stated that ACS WASC visits are a useful form of professional development for educators.

Lost in Paradise

Ridgeview High School After the Camp Fire’s Destruction

Ridgeview High School was completely destroyed in the 2018 Camp Fire, along with many of the students and staffs homes. On behalf of our CCEA’s officers, reps and members, we’d like to express our condolences and support to the staff, students, teachers, and the community affected by this tragedy. Many of these students feel forgotten, and are not seeing the same level of support their general education peers are. To support those affected, please consider donating a gift card of $25 or more to those impacted by the tragedy. We are encouraging registrants to drop off their donation to the registration table upon conference check-in. Read more

Model School Readings and Site-Visits

It’s a very exciting time for continuation schools up and down the state of California. With the Model Continuation High School Southern and Northern Readings complete, many schools are expecting site validation teams to descend on their campuses in expeditious fashion these next couple of months so as to recommend model school status to the California Department of Education.

CCEA is so very proud of all the continuation high schools that applied, and like these schools, we are all eagerly awaiting their model school recognition at the 2019 CCEA Annual Conference in Santa Clara, California. It will be a night of celebration for schools, students, staff members, stakeholders and superintendents.

SHOUT-OUTS:

Over 70 CCEA members and volunteers participated in the Model School field training and model school application readings in September. A huge shout-out to all of you for volunteering your time and professionally developing so as to be a stronger educator and advocate for continuation high school students and schools.

Jacie Ragland (Educational Options Consultant for the CDE) is a dynamic leader, organizer and ambassador for the California Department of Education, as well as CCEA. Jacie led both trainings for the model school readings for the North and for the South. Her genuine care, structuring of success and expertise is unprecedented and CCEA is proud to be aligned with such an exemplary professional. Thank you, Jacie!

Friday, April 26, 2019 — “Model Schools Gala Celebration” Awards Dinner

This awards dinner will be held at the world famous Levi Stadium, home of the 49’ers, with free transportation to the stadium from the hotel and free parking at the stadium for drive in’s. Model School awards will be presented and featured. Attire is evening casual. Schedule: busing from the hotel to the stadium starts at 5pm; President’s reception 5:30pm; dinner at 7:00pm. Saturday, April 26, 2019 — “Professional Awards” Dinner

This awards dinner will honor and feature the following: Exemplary Programs, Student Essays winners, Superintendent of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Teacher of the Year, and Classified Employee of the Year.
